Understanding Congenital Heart Defects in Children & Adults
Congenital heart disease affects nearly 1 in every 100 newborns. Advances in pediatric CTVS surgery allow children born with structural defects to lead full, active, and healthy lives.

Acyanotic (Pink) Heart Defects: Septal Holes
These defects involve abnormal communications between heart chambers that cause oxygenated blood to recirculate through the lungs:
- Atrial Septal Defect (ASD): A hole between the upper collecting chambers. Often detected during childhood or adulthood due to murmur or exercise fatigue; corrected via patch closure.
- Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): A hole between the lower pumping chambers. Large holes require surgical patch closure in early childhood to protect the pulmonary blood vessels from irreversible pressure damage.
Cyanotic (Blue) Heart Defects: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
Cyanotic defects reduce oxygen in systemic circulation, causing bluish discoloration of the lips and fingernails. Tetralogy of Fallot consists of four anatomical abnormalities: a large VSD, pulmonary valve stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, and an overriding aorta. Corrective surgery (TOF repair) completely restores normal blood flow and oxygenation.
Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)
Many adults who underwent pediatric operations or were diagnosed late with silent defects like sinus venosus ASD require specialized follow-up, valve revisions, or late surgical repair under experienced CTVS teams.
