Understanding Recovery Timelines After CABG (Bypass Surgery)

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) restores vital blood flow to oxygen-deprived heart muscle. Knowing what to expect during the weeks following discharge ensures a safe and steady return to daily life.

Understanding Recovery Timelines After CABG (Bypass Surgery)

Week 1 – 2: In-Hospital Recovery & Home Transition

The initial 48–72 hours are spent in the Cardiac ICU for continuous hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator weaning, and drain removal. By Day 4–5, patients walk along hospital corridors and are transitioned to oral medications.

  • Sternal Precautions: Avoid lifting objects heavier than 2 kg, pushing with both arms to stand up, or sleeping on the side.
  • Incentive Spirometry: Practice deep breathing 10 times every waking hour to expand lung bases and prevent atelectasis.
  • Leg Care: If saphenous vein grafts were harvested from the leg, wear compression stockings and elevate legs while sitting.

Weeks 3 – 6: Rebuilding Strength and Routine

Appetite and sleep patterns begin normalizing. Patients engage in structured light walking (15–20 minutes twice daily on flat surfaces). Mild numbness or tingling around the chest incision or graft harvest sites is common and gradually fades as cutaneous nerves heal.

Weeks 7 – 12: Full Bone Healing & Resuming Driving

The sternum (breastbone) typically achieves solid union by 8 to 12 weeks. After clinical confirmation during your OPD follow-up, patients can resume driving, return to non-strenuous professional work, and increase daily walking distances.

Red Flag Warning Signs: When to Call the Clinic

Contact Dr. Aditya's clinical desk immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms during home recovery:

  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) or chills.
  • Clicking sound or sensation of movement in the breastbone (sternum).
  • Redness, swelling, or persistent discharge from the chest or leg incisions.
  • Sudden shortness of breath, rapid irregular heartbeat, or weight gain exceeding 1.5 kg in 2 days (indicative of fluid retention).
Surgeon's Clinical Takeaway

"CABG gives you a fresh start, but long-term graft longevity depends on smoking cessation, strict blood pressure and lipid control, and a disciplined cardiac diet."
