Aortic Aneurysms: Recognizing Symptoms, Risk Factors & Surgical Repair
The aorta is the body's main artery supplying oxygen-rich blood to all vital organs. An aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge that, if left untreated, can rupture or dissect with life-threatening consequences.

Why Aortic Aneurysms are Known as Silent Threats
Most thoracic aortic aneurysms develop slowly without noticeable symptoms until they reach a critical diameter. When symptoms do occur, they may include deep chest or back pain, hoarseness of voice, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath.
Surgical Indication & Bentall Procedure
Elective surgical repair is indicated when the ascending aorta exceeds 5.0 to 5.5 cm in diameter, or grows faster than 0.5 cm per year. In patients with aortic root enlargement and diseased aortic valves, the **Bentall Procedure** replaces the aortic valve, aortic root, and ascending aorta with a composite graft while re-implanting coronary arteries.
"Strict blood pressure control and routine echocardiographic or CT surveillance are essential for anyone with a family history of aortic disease or bicuspid aortic valves."
